ICE and FIRE

Reykjavík City – Þórsmörk Valley

-Valley of the gods

We are picked up at tour guesthouse/ hotel in Reykjavík by our driver guide and his Super Jeep. After meeting our private guide to the adventures in Iceland we head out and start on the highway from Reykjavik driving southeast to a beautiful waterfall Seljalandsfoss where you can feel the drizzle from the falling water while walking behind the waterfall.

Crossing over glacier rivers and rough terrain the green valley of Þórsmörk welcomes us. Þórsmörk is one of the brightest pearls in the string of beautiful areas of the country, surrounded by rugged and majestic mountains, glaciers and glacial rivers, decorated with small birch woods and silver lined with humming streams. In Þórsmörk we will make a short hike and enjoy the nature. Leaving the vegetated area of Þórsmörk we head to the total opposite; the glacier Mýrdalsjökull but under its thick layer of ice there is an active volcano. Now we are on the southernmost glacier in Iceland, and the country’s fourth largest one, the 1493 m high Mýrdalsjökull. It covers an area of 595 square kilometers and its glacial tongues reach down into the lowlands.

The view from the glacier is breathtaking, we see over to Vestmannaeyjar islands, the Mt. Eyjafjöll and the black sandy beaches

Optional:

In Þórsmörk:

River Trip difficulty: 3+ out of 5 possible

River rafting on the Markarfljót River, through its towering and magical canyon, surrounded by glaciers on three sides, is our most scenic trip! The trip starts deep in the interior of Iceland and we use a specially equipped vehicle to get there. The canyon is 50 meters deep where we start and it gradually lowers until we cruise past the lush Þórsmörk valley. The river has a great supply of medium sized waves and rapids. This is your chance to have a unique trip where you can enjoy the majestic nature and at the same time tackle it

Duration – 1 – 1,5 hour on the river but total 3 hrs.

Available beginning of May to end of September

On Mýrdalsjökull glacier:

We have the opportunity to drive further through the world of ice on snow scooters, there is something exhilarating about the feeling you get when going over a glacier on scooters! A snowmobile (or snow scooter) is a land vehicle propelled by one or two rubber tracks, with skis for steering. They are designed to be operated on snow and ice, and require no road or trail. Most snowmobiles are powered by two-stroke gasoline/petrol internal combustion engines.

Duration – 1 hour on the snowmobile

Available all year but depending on whether and circumstances each time

From there we look at Skógarfoss, a clear free and beautiful falling waterfall before heading to our resting place for the night. If we are staying in a hut we will BBQ our dinner with the help of our mountain expert extortionate, there is really nothing like the feeling of a BBQ feast in the middle of nowhere after the day we had.

-Overnight in the Mountain huts or B&B in the aria
